Overview:
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is not as  like as  the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), that involves  ulcerative colitis but it refers to a disorder in the lower part of intestinal tract,
causing abdominal pain and abnormal bowel movements. Emotional stress often makes the symptoms worse.
Causes:
IBS contains an alternating pattern of abdominal pain, constipation and  diarrhea, or  a combination of these problems .and a problem with muscle movement in the intestine .
IBS may happen at any age, but it often begins at early adulthood with an intestinal problem complaint
Symptoms:
Symptoms range from mild to severe. Most people have mild symptoms, acute symptoms appear if you have stress or mood disorders, as anxiety and depression. But you should know that these conditions do not cause IBS.
Symptoms may include:

·        Abdominal pain that:
·        Comes and goes.
·        Goes away after a bowel movement.

Exams and Tests:
Often doctor diagnoses IBS with no tests ,Tests usually reveal no problems. Other doctors recommend a lactose-free diet for 2 weeks to make amends lactase deficiency.
Some patients may need an endoscopy, especially if symptoms begin later in life. Younger patients with persistent diarrhea may need this test to look for inflammatory bowel diseases that can cause similar symptoms, such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. You may need additional tests if you have blood in your stool, weight loss, signs of anemia, or you have recently traveled.
Patients over age 50 should be screened for colon cancer.
Treatment:
The goal of treatment is to relieve symptoms.
Regular exercise, improved sleep habits and a good life style may help relieve bowel symptoms and  reduce anxiety
Dietary changes can be helpful and  Increasing dietary fiber and avoiding foods and drinks that stimulate the intestines (such as caffeine) may help.
Other possible treatments may include:
·        Counseling in cases of severe anxiety or depression to take antidepressants to help relieve intestinal pain.
·        Anti diarrhea medications for patient whose symptom is diarrhea.
