headache (Head pain); causes, types, symptoms and treatment

Headache is a discomfort condition and pain in the head, neck, or scalp which can be easily relieved by making lifestyle changes, learning how to relax, and occasionally by taking medications.

Causes and types:
The most common causes include:
1- Tight, contracted muscles in your shoulders, neck, scalp, and jaw, which called tension headaches.
2-  Stress, depression, or anxiety. Overworking, not getting enough sleep, missing meals, and using alcohol or street drugs.
3- People who drink caffeine  when they don't get their usual daily amount.
 4- Brain tumor and brain infection like meningitis or encephalitis this is a rare causes .

Other causes include:
- Holding your head in one position for a long time, like at a computer, microscope, or typewriter.
- Poor sleep position.
- Overexerting yourself.
- Clenching or grinding your teeth.

Other types of headaches:
1-Cluster headaches : are less common and include symptoms of  extremely painful headaches that tend to occur several times per day .
2-Sinus headaches: cause pain in the front of your head and face, because of the inflammation in the sinus passages that lie behind the cheeks, nose, and eyes.
 If you have a cold, the flu, fever, you are at risk of having headache .
3- temporal arteritis : it affect  people who are over 50 years  includes symptoms of  impaired vision and pain aggravated by chewing. In this type you must ask your doctors at once  because you are in  a risk of becoming blind with this condition.

Treatment : The treatment involves:
- Modification to your environment or habits to avoid future headaches.
- Relaxation techniques and resting with your eyes closed .
- A massage applied to the back of the upper neck can relieve tension headaches  .
- OTC drugs as acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen can applied to treat tension headaches but Aspirin is prevented for children as it causes Reye syndrome .
- Non steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) also applied to treat migraine headaches .
- Other prescription may be involved by doctors if OTC drugs  do not relieve the symptoms  .
-  Note that Temporal arteritis must be treated with steroids to help prevent blindness.

The following healthy habits can  reduce your chance of getting headaches:
-         Getting adequate sleep.
-         Eating a healthy diet.
-         Exercising regularly.
-         Stretching your neck and upper body, especially if your work involves typing or using a computer.
-         Learning proper posture.
-         Quitting smoking.
